What to expect from Brixham
Brixham is one of those places that quietly wins you over. Colourful houses tumble down the hill towards one of England’s busiest fishing harbours, where fishing boats still land their daily catch just a short stroll from the famous Golden Hind.
It’s a place best explored without rushing. Wander along the harbour, climb aboard the Golden Hind and pick up a pot of fresh seafood from one of the waterfront kiosks. Brixham remains the UK’s busiest fishing harbour, generating around £77m a year.

There’s something rather special about climbing aboard a Tudor sailing ship and being free to wander wherever curiosity takes you. Children love exploring the decks and even dogs are welcome.
The level of detail inside is incredible and the free audio guide and information boards reveal fascinating stories from Drake’s voyage to the surprising origin of the saying “not enough room to swing a cat.” You can even ‘walk the plank’ if you’re brave enough.

One of the pleasures of Brixham Harbour is visiting Brixham Fish Market to see what the local fleet has landed that day. Depending on the season, you might find crab, lobster, monkfish, Dover sole and dozens of other types of seafood.
Afterwards, pick up a pot of prawn cocktail, mussels or dressed crab from one of the nearby harbour-side vendors and enjoy it overlooking the fishing boats.
