What to expect from Warwick Castle

From the moment you walk beneath the portcullis, Warwick Castle feels less like a museum and more like a film set. Falcons soar overhead, knights sit comfortably on horses and the towers invite exploration.

Younger visitors will make a beeline for all things Zog in a quest to earn their very own gold star. Older children and teenagers are more likely to remember the jousting or being ‘tortured’ in the live-actor dungeons.

Are the dungeons worth it or too scarey

Older children and adults can step into the castle’s darker past in the Castle Dungeon experience, brought to life by live actors, special effects, and immersive sets. This spooky, theatrical experience is best suited to brave adventurers aged 10 and over.

It’s definitely not for the faint-hearted but part of a family day out in the UK that you’ll never forget. Just be warned there is lots of audience participation so you could see yourself ‘put on trial’ by the amazing historical characters as they relive their stories.

The one show you shouldn't miss

The War of the Roses LIVE! jousting tournament is the must see show. The dramatic re-enactments of the war feature knights in full armour competing in exciting battles that will thrill visitors of all ages. There is also some very dramatic horsemanship.

The shows are based in the furthest corner of the castle grounds, so make sure you allow enough time to get there. You can download the Warwick Castle app for the exact showtimes. Bear in mind people will stand in front of the seats. Go up the stalls for a view.

When falcons take to the skies

One of the best things to do at Warwick Castle for families is watch The Falconer’s Quest. This thrilling show combines storytelling and majestic birds of prey, owls and eagles. It’s incredible to experience the birds swoop through the audience.

It’s also a great place for a picnic as you can sit on the lawn before the show starts and refill water bottles by the nearby bridge. Just use the toilets before the show, as once the birds start flying you’re not allowed to stand up.

Why younger children head straight to Zog

A must-see for those visiting Warwick Castle with children are the many Zog attractions. Upon entering the castle, children can pick up a stamp card and complete five lessons to earn a gold star. These immersive dragon training activities include learning to roar and capturing a princess.

There’s also a Zog adventure playground, opportunities to meet and greet Zog himself and watch Zog and The Flying Doctors help a unicorn, a lion and a mermaid. The shows are true to the popular Julia Donaldson books and there’s lots of seating.
